WEEKEND RECAP: Highlights from Texas Relays, Stanford Invite, UCLA Legends & Shotwell Invite...

AUSTIN, Texas—Competing against a field that included several Olympians, Washington pole vaulters Liz Quick (left/photo by Paul Merca) and Kristina Owsinski finished ninth and twelfth Saturday on the final day of the Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

Quick and Owsinski, the last two Pac-12 champs in the pole vault, each cleared identical heights of 13-11.25 (4.25m), with Quick clearing on her first attempt, and Owsinski needing all three attempts to navigate the mark.

2012 Olympic gold medalist Jenn Suhr opened up her 2017 outdoor campaign by winning the competition with a best of 15-6.25 (4.73m).

The Huskies’ Kennadi Bouyer finished eighth in the finals of the women’s 100, running 11.84, as Kortnei Johnson of LSU won in 11.19.

Washington’s 4 x 400 relay team of Andrew Brown, Ryan Croson, Michael Thomas, and Jacopo Spano were disqualified for a lane violation, wiping out a time of 3:09.66.

In Los Angeles, WSU’s Sam Brixey won the men’s 110 hurdles in a photo finish to highlight Washington State’s day at the UCLA Legends meet at Drake Stadium on the UCLA campus.

Brixey won in a time of 14.10 (14.094), the same time credited to UCLA’s Misana Viltz (14.098), with Brixey nosing Viltz by 4/1000ths of a second.

The Cougars’ Christapherson Grant was fourth in the same race in 14.48.

Reigning Pac-12 400 hurdles champion CJ Allen won his event in a time of 50.53.

Former Pac-12 heptathlon champion Alissa Brooks-Johnson, who was injured during the 2016 outdoor campaign, competed in three events, throwing 125-0 (38.12m) in the javelin for sixth, and ran the 100 hurdles in 14.44 (13th), and the 400 hurdles in 61.75 (5th).

In Palo Alto, California, Washington freshman Jose Padilla won his flight of the shot put to highlight the final day of competition at the Stanford Invitational.

Padilla threw 56-2 (17.12m), outdistancing his closest competitor by almost four feet.

In the mens 800, the Huskies’ Connor Morello won his heat of the 800, running 1:51.21.

Late Friday night, WSU’s Vallery Korir broke the school record in the 10000, running 33:58.17 in the second section of the event.

Central Washington’s Mariyah Vongsaveng was seventh in the finals of the 100 hurdles, running 14.29.


In Tacoma, all of Washington’s GNAC schools had athletes participating in the Shotwell Invitational hosted by the University of Puget Sound.

The best mark of the day was a double win in the 800 and 1500 by Shannon Porter, as she ran 2:13.71 and 4:32.61. It should be noted that Porter, an All-American indoors at 3000m at Saint Martin’s, competed unattached Saturday.
