Katie Mackey of the Brooks Beasts gets Washington athletes started at IAAF World Indoor Championships Thursday...


There may only be three events on the docket, but the IAAF World Indoor Track & Field Championships get underway Thursday at the Arena Birmingham in the British Midlands.

University of Washington alum Katie Mackey (left/photo by Paul Merca) of the Brooks Beasts will run in the finals of the women’s 3000 at 8:15 local time (12:15 pm in Seattle) Thursday, where she will run against a field that includes 2016 world indoor champion at 1500 Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and the Nike Oregon Project; US national champion Shelby Houlihan of the Portland based Bowerman AC; two-time defending world indoor champ at 3000m Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia; reigning world champion outdoors at 5000m Hellen Obiri of Kenya; and Great Britain’s Stephanie Twell and Eilish McColgan.

Other athletes with Washington ties competing in the four-day meet include Washington State University volunteer assistant coach Katie Nageotte, the reigning US national champion in the pole vault; Drew Windle of the Brooks Beasts in the men’s 800; former Washington State volunteer assistant coach Liga Velvere of Latvia in the women’s 800; and former Washington State assistant coach Angela Whyte of Canada in the 60 hurdles.

Velvere and Whyte both competed at the 2016 world indoor championships in Portland. Velvere was sixth in her heat, while Whyte finished fifth in the finals.

Katie Nageotte, w PV—6:00 pm/10:00 am (final)
Angela Whyte, w 60H—6:05 pm/10:05 am (semi-final)
Drew Windle, m 800—7:35 pm/11:35 am (final)
Angela Whyte, w 60H—8:55 pm/12:55 pm (final)

SUNDAY:

Liga Velvere, w 800—3:58 pm/7:58 am (final)

The official start lists for the world championships will be posted on the IAAF.org site after Thursday morning’s technical meeting.



NBCSN, the Olympic Channel and the NBC Sports Gold track & field package ($) will broadcast the meet this weekend.
